I could make up a list of 101 reasons NOT to get up and go running in the morning. But 100 are excuses. And 1 is fear. |

Exercising outdoors when it's below 64 degrees Fahrenheit actually helps you burn more calories. How? Your body is constantly working to keep your core at 98.6. The colder it is, the more your body has to work. At around 55 degrees for 30 minutes in shorts and a T-shirt, your body will enter non shivering thermogenesis; meaning, an increase in heat production not related to exercise. Meaning... you're burning more calories just standing there. Great! Now get moving!
1+1=2 and if you're cold now, then you'll probably be shivering soon. You'll receive a boost in your Metabolic Rate, meaning you're losing more at a faster rate. But, keep in mind, it's short lived. Which is perfect actually, because, hey, it's freaking cold out there! Exercising in the cold is most effective when done in short bouts rather than all morning marathons.
I loved the way Google defines brown fat,
He explains the subject of burning more fat HERE if you'd like to read it. |
Sometimes though, we already know it's good for us, but, for one of the 101 reasons above, we opt out of the opportunity.
So if you are facing that very problem in your life, of giving up or giving in when you should be getting out, this video may very well help you too.

None of us are the same, nor do we require the same exact workouts. But most of us all have a few things in common.
What's Around Us |
If you're trying to get back in the swing of working out, then read on courageous friend.
These bad boys go into jail and come out looking cut! It's jail. If they can do it in a tiny cell, then surely can I in my 2,000 sq ft house.
They can't just go to Target and buy the Martha Stewart workout set or join a Rainbow Run with their BFFs. And guess what Shopping Shannon- you don't need yoga mats or waist trainers or resistance bands or or or....
Plus, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I have quite a lot in common with these caged bad guys. Kinda.

When you're sick, when you're tired, when you 're depressed, you're caged. You haven't committed the crime, but you're doing the time. (Everybody in jail is innocent anyway.)
You're caged from the life you could have, but if you do the time, when you come out, you'll be prepared to take on the world.

Here are some great beginner exercises you can do anytime.
Juice Bottles: Grasp and hold the container in front of you with both hands making sure your elbows are bent. |
Laundry Detergent Bottles: Stand tall and hold the bottle in your right/left hand, letting it hang at your side. Allow your waist to bend and hinge slowly feeling the weight of the bottle, then raise yourself up again. |
Oven or Dresser: Practice standing for two minutes. This may take time to develop, but will give you better balance and core strength. |
These everyday things in our everyday lives can give us more than everyday strength. Try them and see if you can keep the habit up for 30 days! And before you laugh at their simplicity, try doing 30 repetitions and get back to me. You won't be disappointed.
What you eat today, is how you'll feel tomorrow.
Get Mad

Aren't you sick and tired of telling yourself every night you'll workout first thing in the morning... and never do? Aren't you frustrated that you keep dreaming up plans and routines yet never complete them? What's stopping you? The answer isn't an excuse. Only you are stopping yourself, why? Wouldn't you like to prove them all wrong? Wouldn't you love to look back on today and remember it as the day you started living your life instead of following it?
So damn straight get mad. Get mad at those things that held you back, didn't support you or believe you. Get mad at your own inaction and self made excuses and use that anger to drive you to a better place, to push you to where you need to be. Get uncomfortable and start fighting back.

Simplify It

Let me be REAL clear about this part. You don't need special shoes or stretchy pants. You don't need some overly complicated routine, or the newest "MOST EXTREME" workout dvd to be successful- that's what you need if you want to be broke and still outta shape.
If Bubba in jail can get an 8pack and arms big enough to be nick named "the pythons" with nothing more than a prison cell and what he finds, then certainly you can too in your own non prison with a mocha latte maker in the kitchen.
It's easy to spend all our time preparing, in reality we are just procrastinating.
Just do it.
Don't worry about your shoes or that all you have is pajama pants to run in. Guess what? No one is looking. Stirring noodles in the kitchen? Stop and do pushups on the counter. Mopping the floor? Lunge mop the floor. Doing laundry? Lift the detergent bottle 10x.
Just do it and before you know it, your sore and your proud.

It's not about feelings

This isn't some gooey romance story or Fifty Shades of Grey. This is real life; this is YOUR life. If you waited until you felt like doing things, you would never get anything done!
But I know you know that saying already, don’t you? So, why are you still thinking about your feelings instead of thinking about your goals?
Most people who run don't feel like running every time. But they do it anyway.
Men and women who run towards danger and uncertainty surely have feelings of doubt and fear. But they do it anyway.
Sadly, most folks don't feel like getting up at whatever ungodly hour to trudge off to work. But they do it anyway.
We all have feelings. We all want and desire comfort; but it's misleading. Comfort equals stagnation and leads to laziness and inaction.
You can validate your feelings without actually having to abide by them. You can recognize that you’re tired and have worked all day, and you can acknowledge that the last thing you want to do is go running. But what does that have to do with you becoming the person that you want to become?
Nothing.
You feel like you need to keep waiting longer or that you’re not ready yet. I say to you that if you’re comfortable and afraid to leave that place, then you’re already stagnant. You are the one in control, not your feelings.
Decide that you have to do this for yourself! THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!

Don't do it alone

Think of every great superhero, masked men and women protecting the innocent; whisking bad guys off to their fate. Fighting tirelessly for truth and justice, and coming to the aid of the helpless. All of these fighters for good have two things in common; each has a nemesis and each has a side kick.
Think about it.
Sure, Batman is great, but he still requires Robin and Alfred at his side.
Find your side kick.
Secondly, the majority of what you’re going through and are too embarrassed to ask about, are the same things that other people are going through.
Yes, my boobs are sagging too, and yes eggs give me gas too!
Find your support system, whether that's a friend or a professional, One that you can not only workout with, but share more personal (and comical) stuff with.
But also remember Batman never used Robin as an excuse not to save a damsel in distress. You can't use your support system as an excuse…because there are no excuses.
You are only competing against who you were yesterday, but we all need support in the journey.
Find yours.
