5 Bright Ideas For Baking Soda

3/4/2017

Baking soda is an amazing powder, given many names by scientists and nerdy folk alike. Names like sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or sodium acid carbonate- all mean the same thing: baking soda.
Our pH level needs to be at about 7 (neural) and baking soda's is more alkaline at about 8- but here's the cool nerdy thing- if it mixes with more acidic or alkaline substances... it still stays at 8- meaning it's perfect for anti-acids, fire extinguishing and of course, cleaning.

"When baking soda is used as a cleaner in paste form or dry on a damp sponge, its crystalline structure provides a gentle abrasion that helps to remove dirt without scratching sensitive surfaces. Its mild alkalinity works to turn up fatty acids contained in dirt and grease into a form of soap that can be dissolved in water and rinsed easily. "- Encyclopedia.com

Clean Surfaces Safely

Clean surfaces safely. Sprinkle some baking soda on a damp sponge or rag and get ta' scrubbing! Perfect for fiberglass, sinks, tubs, glossy tiles, and basically anything in your bathroom for a teenager to clean when they're being punished.

Get Clothes Fresher, Brighter and Cleaner

Because of it's pH level, adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to your laundry helps your detergent work harder. Maybe you could even start buying the cheaper laundry detergent and use baking soda with it? By Joe.... I think we'd save at least $3.62 a month! Laugh now, but when my "vacation jar" fills up faster than yours and I'm headed to the Bahamas, you'll be sorry.

Un-kid Your Walls & Furniture

If kids are known for anything, it's for their sticky fingers. Get the gunk off your walls cheaper than using a magic eraser. Just add some baking soda to a wet sponge and vaa-laa, finger free walls... for today anyway.  (hey those erasers aren't cheap!)

Get The Stink Out Of Your Carpets

You know the smell. The walked on, dog feet, spilled popcorn from last week, and sneaker smell. Don't waste your money on products that perfume the carpet for 30 minutes and do nothing but hurt your brain every time you breathe in. Baking soda's chemical make up actually absorbs the odors and rids you of them. Hey, I think we just saved another $3.97 on not buying carpet powder! Watch out world here we come!

You Say Tomato, I Say Tomahto..

Whether you are needing to wash your tomatoes, or eating them in a dish; baking soda is your buddy. Create a water paste with baking soda and gently wash off your fresh tomatoes. Perfect for getting all the dirt off your fresh fruit (yes tomatoes are a fruit silly).
If tomatoes tend to be a little to acidic for you, adding a pinch of baking soda to your tomato sauce, chili, or marinara can prevent heartburn or upset belly.
